DAWN – REMEMBERING SCOTT

Sculpted from life, two nights per week, three hours per night, for four months, this work captures the sadness of the model Dawn grieving her late brother Scott, who died of AIDS.  The clay was ‘coincidentally’ completed on the second anniversary of Scott’s death.  This two time award-winning, life size functional sculpture is so real that many people have mistaken her for a real woman (when seen at a clothing optional resort) or body cast, though she was sculpted in clay, not cast off a body. Above is #4/6 bronze.  Above left bottom, at Harbin.  Dawn is seated on Ashi’s Environment Bench - faux-wood cast concrete.  Ten percent of artist’s profit on Dawn goes to the model.

REVIEWS

" I said to myself, I could be sitting here with another

Rodin.  A great artist.  A man of courage and hope."

“I first saw her from the balcony...It was at least

1/2 hour later, leaving my room that I realized the

"girl" was a bronze statue!!  Wow, what a delightful

illusion!  You caught Rodin's Thinker, but in a highly

feminine form...  PERFECT.  Wonderful work. "

-Kitra Sutherland

IF WE SAVE THE BOXES

Life size mixed media. Shown (above) at the 1976 New York Bicentennial Street Fair, 57th Street, NYC.  The titile is seen at the top of the above photo, made of various brand collected cigarette boxes, with the casket and flag made from Marlboro and Parliament boxes. This sculptural tragic comedy was designed to help the artist quit smoking while making a statement to America about our self destructive habits. Uncle Sam represents US as smokers. It won first prize at the staff art show at Ideal Toy Company, where Ashi was employed as one of the four staff sculptors.
